![]() ![]() The Lobster is kind of the exception here. "You're a fop, and a prat and you smell like an old French whore's vajoo" The costumes are great, and I love how everyone talks. The Favorite is a little different, it's less overt and relies more on the interplay between the three mains - which becomes interesting in its own way as this petty squabble gets darker and darker juxtaposed over a traditionally stuffy and proper setting. Either that works for you, or it doesn't. It's just this pervasive strange vibe that penetrates the whole movie and puts you on edge. It's just something deep down in your brain telling you that it's off-putting and wrong even if you can't quite pinpoint why. The entirety of Sacred Deer is like the movie equivalent of listening to someone slurp spaghetti. His movies also tend to have an interesting look to them. With his movies, it's kind of more of a visceral thing in than anything "deep", although I do believe there is probably a nugget of meaning in there somewhere. Hope that makes sense, and I understand it’s not for everyone too :) I just think they have an interesting point of view and representations of humans as simplistic social beings in ways that we dont see much in cinema. Not saying it’s the most depth in the world, nor stories to learn anything from. But more than anything, just dark humour: how stupid was Agamemnon to do that? Transposed nowadays, it’s also completely absurd that he would accept this like he does and to me seems like a comment on apathy. Sacred deer is an adaptation of an ancient Greek myth: Iphigenia in Auris, where Agamemnon is asked to kill one of his children to appease the gods. The Lobster is a comment on how obsessed we are about finding the right person to spend the rest of our lives with and all the rules attached to that without which society would judge us and stop viewing us as a human of any worth: must be the right age, have all the right things in common. I see it as his vision of human relations, just going through motions and the stupid way in which he sees social cues, stripped from the daily performances we put on (from small talk to sex). As art rather than any moral superiority!įrom Dogtooth to Sacred Deer, he made his actors perform in a very wooden, almost autistic manner. I wouldn’t say there is huge depth in his films either, just an absurdist vision of the world I find interesting. ![]() Just that as a director until The Favourite, he had a consistent vision of the world. ![]() I agree with you and never said he promoted a high moral truth. Many times they are just delusional and talented filmmakers, or maybe they are promoting a highly immoral moral system.” We shouldn't look at authors or story tellers as all knowing gods revealing some eternal truths about something. “I am always cautious with art and story telling. It was a calculated break for him with the help of Fox rather than his masterpiece. Most people I know had never heard of him when The Favourite came out, now any of his future arthouse films will likely play in multiplexes because it can have “by the director of The Favourite on all the ads. His films only played in art house cinemas (at least in the UK). ![]() He was only really famous in the cinephile crowds and in the festival circuits. “I don't know, I think if you make a movie starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Ferrel that you wrote and directed you are a lot bigger than an "greek indie filmmaker" I think.” I agree so maybe I will modify my position and say he needs a cowriter. We need more small weird screenplays in the world He is like a less stylized, dark Wes Anderson. The lobster I recall not being anything to insightful either. Killing a Sacred Deer made me respect him less and less the more I thought about it. Like he is nowhere near Charlie Kaufman for example, like know Kaufmann is a genius and any depth I read into a film it is probably intended and there is more. This was especially true for Killing of a Sacred Deer. I haven't seen much depth behind the quirkiness. Many times they are just delusional and talented filmmakers, or maybe they are promoting a highly immoral moral system. I am always cautious with art and story telling. I don't know, I think if you make a movie starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Ferrel that you wrote and directed you are a lot bigger than an "greek indie filmmaker" I think.Ībsurdity of human society which to me makes it a little bit less interesting.
